Herschel Walker Return Inspirational

Now this is inspirational. Especially for a guy in his mid 40’s like myself. Rumor has it that 48-year-old (49 in March) Herschel Walker wants to return to the NFL. http://www.sportingnews.com/nfl/story/2011-01-25/herschel-walker-i-want-to-be-george-foreman-of-football. Undoubtedly, football fans in their 20’s and 30’s will decipher this news with much skepticism…… until they get a look at this guy.

The guy is a  picture of perfect health and not an ounce of fat on him. According to him his exercise routine consists of 1000 push-ups and 3500 sit-ups a day (who’s got that kind of time?) and….he’s a vegetarian. His doctors have told him he could still play football and help a team if he wanted to.

So what’s the 1982 (jeesh) Heisman Trophy winner been up to since he retired from the NFL 14 years ago? Playing golf? Selling burger machines? Hardly. The born-again Christian has earned a 5th degree black belt in Tae-Kwon-Do, has appeared on the reality show Celebrity Apprentice, and most recently been signed by MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) promotion Strikeforce to compete in their heavyweight division. He won his first fight by TKO and is scheduled to fight again this month.

Can you imagine the excitement and inspiration 40 and 50 year olds would get watching Herschel on the football field? Most in the game today weren’t even born yet when he won the Heisman Trophy.  He said he’d like to play for the Atlanta Falcons, his home team or………ready for this? The Minnesota Vikings, the team that gained him notoriety for being the subject of the worst trade in sports franchise history. The trade that netted the Dallas Cowboys 3 Super Bowl rings.

We’ll continue to watch Herschel and see how he handles his “mid-life crisis”.  In the meantime, this 45-year-old is hitting the gym. I’m not giving up my meat though. Sorry Herschel!
